Many people don’t realize just how much water damage costs to fix. It’s not only floods you have to worry about, but even something as common as a leaking or clogged pipe. If you live in an apartment or condo and have people living above you, often their plumbing problems will effect you more than their own unit!

Having standing water or excess moisture will result in damage to virtually your entire house. Everything from the drywall to the floorboards will be ruined. The thing that many people don’t realize is that minor water damage can be more damaging than minor fire damage. The reason why is because a small fire will only destroy what it burns, meanwhile a flood will destroy everything it touches if the water is left standing for any period of time. This is why it’s so important to clean up promptly anytime this occurs. It’s not just as simple as wiping it up with a towel though. If the inside of your drywall is flooded, you will need a professional to come in and dry it out quickly in order to possibly save it. They can do this by inserting various heaters, fans, and other instruments through openings in the drywall (such as removing air vents). If this isn’t done promptly, not only will your drywall be ruined, but also dangerous mold will begin growing inside that you may not even be able to see or detect. Mold remediation can be expensive, so it’s best to avoid this! Black mold is a deadly growth that thrives in that type of environment. It’s so dangerous that is actually can kill you!

Another good tip to prevent this from occurring is to keep your plumbing in prime shape. You want to make sure there are no clogged or partially clogged pipes. In addition, be sure that are fittings are leak proof. Often times, small leaks will go on for an extended period of time hidden from your view (behind the walls) and the end result is extensive water damage and mold growth inside the walls. Don’t let this happen to you!
